RESOURCES - HOW DO I ROLL OUT AND WEAVE THE FABRIC TOGETHER FOR A CHAIN LINK FENCE?

To determine the salvage of the fabric, you need to examine the roll. The salvage refers to how the fabric is bound together on the ends, either knuckled over or twisted together. If one end is knuckled and the other is twisted, it is important to identify which end goes on the top and which end goes on the bottom. Once you have determined this, you can proceed with the fabric installation using the following steps:

  1. buildingachainlinkfence-10.jpgPlace the fabric roll perpendicular to your fence line with the bottom end closest to the post. The fabric should be installed on the outside of the fence, aligned with the flush side of your tension bands. Check if the roll can be easily unrolled on the ground like a carpet. If not, you may need to start at the other end of the fence line to achieve this.
  2. Stand the fabric roll up about 3 feet from the terminal post and flush against the outside of the top rail.
  3. Untie the fabric and spin the roll by hand until the beginning of the fabric is loosely pulled up to the terminal post.
  4. Tie the fabric for height by loosely attaching a fence tie to the top of the fabric and wrapping it around the top rail 8 inches from the terminal post. Repeat the process 24 inches from the terminal post, making sure to have a half diamond above the top rail.
  5. Run a tension bar through the end of the fabric, while also running it through the evenly spaced tension bands on the terminal posts.
  6. Tip the fabric roll away from the top rail and unroll it along the fence line on the ground, as if unrolling a carpet.
  7. buildingachainlinkfence-12.jpgbuildingachainlinkfence-11.jpgWhen reaching the end of a roll, join a new roll by weaving the two together as shown in Figure 14. To do this, first un-knuckle or untie the weave at the end of the roll. Then, using a cork screw twisting motion, unscrew the weave out of the fabric until it is completely removed.
  8. Place the new roll at the end of the existing one and unroll it about three feet. Align the ends of the two rolls together and begin weaving the wire weave back into both pieces of fabric, catching both with each full corkscrew twist.
  9. You may need to remove more than one weave to get the two pieces of fabric to mesh properly. Check the top of both rolls to see if they both begin with two complete diamonds. If they do, you will need to remove one more weave. If one roll has a complete diamond and the other has a half diamond, you can begin weaving the two rolls back together using the wire weave that you initially removed. If you have one complete diamond on one roll and one half diamond on the other, you can begin to weave the two rolls back together with the wire weave you initially removed.buildingachainlinkfence-13.jpg
  10. After weaving the rolls together, tie or knuckle both ends to complete the process.
  11. Repeat the steps of rolling out fabric and weaving it together until you reach the next terminal post or a distance of 200 feet.
  12. If you reach the next terminal post, hand stretch the fabric by dragging it along the ground.
  13. Shake the fabric like a rug while pulling it to break the galvanizing at the knuckles, ensuring that it is tight and straight.
  14. Continue pulling the fabric past the terminal post, and remove a weave at the post so that the fabric on the ground ends there. You are now ready to stretch the fabric.
